An optimizing study of smoke exhaustion and personnel evacuation in a gymnasium

Abstract

Considering the factors such as appearance and function in large gymnasiums′ design, some firefighting designs like areas of fire compartments and evacuation distance go beyond the existing fire rules, causing a series of problems, such as the change of fire spreading characteristics, change of smoke movements and so on. At the same time, larger evacuation distance may lead to larger evacuation time.This paper evaluates the fire protecting system in a large gymnasium by using FDS and Pathfinder, and determines smoke exhaust rate, optimizes evacuation strategy, in order to achieve fire safety objectives.
